Kevin Vandergriff Struck by Vehicle While Riding Bicycle in Woodland

WOODLAND, WA (March 14, 2023) – Officers identified Kevin Vandergriff of Seattle as the victim injured in a bicycle accident on 5 Freeway on March 12.

According to the Washington State Patrol, the collision happened near milepost 21 around 7:55 PM. Based on a report, Vandergriff was riding an electric bicycle in the center lane of the freeway prior to the crash.

Behind him was 49-year-old Kristen L. Schaffner of Lakewood driving a Hyundai Sonata in the left lane. As Schaffner merged into the middle lane, she struck Vandergriff’s bicycle.

As a result, Vandergriff suffered injuries in the incident. Crews took him to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center for treatment. Schaffner was uninjured, the crash memo states.

Officers said Vandergriff was on a limited-access highway, which prohibits bicycles except on the right shoulder. He was also not wearing reflective clothing.

As of now, an investigation is ongoing. In addition, officers say they do not know whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.

Bicycles are easy to miss because of their size and lack of lighting. So, always check your surroundings when driving, especially in highways and in areas near intersections.
