Fernando Meraz-Ontiveros Hospitalized, Woman Dead in Head-On Accident in Wapato

 
WAPATO, WA (May 29, 2024) — 22-year-old Fernando Meraz-Ontiveros sustained injuries in a head-on crash that killed another on Sunday, May 19.
 
According to a Washington State Patrol, the accident took place on 82 Freeway, around two miles east of the Donald Wapato Road exit just after 10:45 p.m.
 
WSP said a 27-year-old Toppenish woman drove a 2006 Subaru Legacy sedan east in the westbound lanes of 82 Freeway. Then her vehicle struck a westbound 2017 Chevrolet Cruze driven by Yakima resident Meraz-Ontiveros in the left-hand lane.
 
After that, the Cruze then went into the right lane and struck a 2013 Dodge Charger driven by 21-year-old Edwin Carmona of Union Gap.
 
Emergency responders brought the woman and Meraz-Ontiveros to MultiCare Yakima Memorial Hospital. Medical officers pronounced the woman dead.
 
Meanwhile, Meraz-Ontiveros’ condition was not immediately available. Carmona did not sustain any injuries.
 
Troopers have not yet released the identity of the woman pending notification of her loved ones.
 
The WSP report said all three drivers wore seat belts. Additionally, intoxication is a factor in the crash.
 
Authorities continue to investigate the incident.
