Esteban Cortes Killed in Seattle Pedestrian Accident

SEATTLE, WA (March 7, 2024) — 22-year-old Esteban Cortes, of Marysville, died in a pedestrian crash on Wednesday, February 28.

According to the Washington State Patrol, Cortes’ vehicle became disabled on the right shoulder of the northbound 5 freeway near the Mercer Street exit at around 12:45 a.m.

WSP said Cortes initially crossed all lanes of the 5 Freeway on foot to the left side of the freeway. After that, the pedestrian tried to cross all lanes. However, a vehicle struck him while returning to the right shoulder. He died at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle, a 49-year-old Tacoma man, stayed at the scene after the crash. WSP said he was not under the influence. In addition, WSP said the driver will not face any charges.

Authorities blocked the roadway for over four hours while WSP cleared the area. Washington State Department of Transportation said all lanes reopened at 4:30 a.m.
