Ameer Hassan Charged with Murder after Fatal Pedestrian Accident in Harlingen

 
HARLINGEN, TX (November 8, 2023) — A Harlingen doctor, Dr. Ameer Elsayed Hassan, has been indicted in connection to a fatal pedestrian crash on April 26.
 
The crash took place at North Ed Carey Drive in front of Valley Baptist Medical Center at around 12:04 p.m.
 
Reports said 73-year-old San Juana Benavides Sanchez tried to cross the street on a crosswalk in the intersection. Then Hassan struck the victim as he failed to yield the right of way to the pedestrian and was using a cell phone while driving.
 
On October 4, a Cameron County grand jury charged Hassan with one count of second-degree manslaughter.
 
The Texas Medical Board said they have temporarily suspended Hassan’s medical license. They said that his practice of medicine “poses a continuing threat to public welfare.”
 
The temporary suspension remains in effect until further action.
