William Wegner Killed, Maricela Tinajera Arrested after Dayton Hit-and-Run

 
DAYTON, TX (August 16, 2023) — A 41-year-old man identified as William Thomas Wegner died after a vehicular crash on Highway 146 on Friday, July 14.
 
According to the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, a passing motorist noticed a body on Monday, July 17, on Highway 146 in Dayton. Based on the level of decay, officers believe a vehicle struck the victim.
 
A sheriff’s office spokesman said they believed Wegner rode a bicycle. Then a vehicle struck him and left the scene.
 
A debris field approximately 40 yards long remained at the scene. Investigators used the pieces of evidence left in the scene, including parts of a door mirror, to search for the suspect.
 
On Wednesday, July 19, officers received a tip about the whereabouts of the suspect and the involved vehicle They found a silver 2017-20 model Dodge Ram truck matching the debris. In addition, they matched the DNA on the scene to the suspect.
 
Authorities then arrested the suspect as 37-year-old Maricela Tinajera. They charged her with Failure to Stop and Render Aid in an Accident Involving Death. The charge is a second-degree felony with a maximum sentence of 20 years.
 
Officials continue to investigation the crash.
