Volunteer Firefighter Edward Hykel Killed in Accident While Responding to Vehicle Fire in West

 
WEST, TX (April 7, 2023) – Officers identified volunteer firefighter 60-year-old Edward Hykel as the victim who died in an accident on 35 Freeway on March 28.
 
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the collision happened near mile marker 354. Based on a report, troopers were providing traffic control along with firefighters from the West Fire Department.
 
The victim was with other fire crews working on a vehicle fire. Due to unknown reasons, a tractor-trailer disregarded the traffic control devices and struck the fire truck and two patrol units on the highway.
 
As a result, Hykel suffered grave injuries in the incident. Crews transported him to the hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
 
Two troopers suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
 
As of now, the case remains under investigation. In addition, no other details are available.
