Uriel Sanchez and Jordon Lewis Killed after Wrong-Way Crash in Laveen Village

 
LAVEEN VILLAGE, AZ (August 29, 2024) — Uriel Sanchez and Jordon Lewis suffered fatal injuries in a wrong-way accident on Sunday, August 18.
 
According to Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers, the crash took place on Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway near Baseline Road at about 2:00 a.m.
 
DPS said 22-year-old Uriel Sanchez, of Chandler, drove southbound in the northbound lanes of the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway.
 
Seconds later, Sanchez slammed head-on into another car near Elliot Road. Authorities identified the driver of the second vehicle as 19-year-old Jordon Lewis of Laveen.
 
A third vehicle was also involved in the crash. The driver was able to control their car and came to a stop.
 
Emergency responders pronounced Sanchez and Lewis dead at the scene. They were the only occupants of their vehicles.
 
The people inside the third car were not hurt in the incident.
 
Authorities said one of the drivers was not wearing a seatbelt. In addition, they suspect impairment was a factor.
 
Officers closed the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway northbound at Elliot Road for more than eight hours. They reopened all the closed lanes at 2:00 p.m.
 
The investigation is the accident is still underway.
