FOUNTAIN HILLS, AZ (June 6, 2024) — Three people died following a wrong-way accident on Highway 87 on Sunday, May 26.
 
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the crash took place on Highway 87 near Shea Boulevard at 4:15 a.m.
 
AZDPS said a car moving south crossed over into the northbound lanes and then crashed with another vehicle.
 
The crash killed three passengers in the vehicles. Meanwhile, emergency responders brought the two drivers to a nearby hospital with serious injuries.
 
The identities of the victims were not immediately available, pending notification of next of kin.
 
AZDPS said they have ruled out impairment as a factor in this collision.
 
Officers closed the northbound lanes of Highway 87 near Shea Boulevard for the investigation. They reopened all closed lanes shortly before 2:00 p.m.
