DUI Driver Involved in Car Crash on Highway 266 in Otero County
OTERO COUNTY, CO (October 16, 2023) – At least six people suffered injuries in a DUI crash on Highway 266 on October 9.
According to the Colorado State Patrol, the crash happened at Otero County Road 25 just before 1:00 AM. Based on a report, a 16-year-old boy from Kansas was driving a minivan westbound on Highway 266 with five passengers.
Due to unknown reasons, he missed a marked left turn, overcorrected, and spun off the roadway. He then collided with both a delineator post and the curve indicator sign. His minivan kept going, ending up down an embankment where it rolled twice. The impact ejected four of the six occupants from the van.
As a result, the driver suffered serious injuries. Two of his passengers had moderate to serious injuries. A 24-year-old man from Sterling and a 16-year-old boy from Ordway had moderate injuries. A 14-year-old girl from Ordway had minor injuries.
State Patrol did not know whether any of the injuries were life-threatening.
Police said drinking and driving were the cause of the crash.
As of now, an investigation into the case is ongoing. In addition, no other details are available.
