Melissa Powell and Son Riordan Powell Killed, Jose Menjivar Arrested in DUI Crash on Main Street and Miramonte Boulevard

 
BROOMFIELD, CO (December 21, 2023) — A mother and her son, 46-year-old Melissa Powell and 16-year-old Riordan Powell, died in a DUI crash.
 
The crash took place on Main Street and Miramonte Boulevard, near Broomfield High School, at about 1:20 p.m. on Tuesday, December 12.
 
The Broomfield community mourns the loss of Melissa Powell and her son Riordan. Reports said Riordan was a student at Broomfield High School and a Boulder TEC junior. Loved ones created a GoFundMe page for their bereaved family.
 
Investigators said speed and alcohol contributed to the crash. Police arrested the alleged drunk driver, Jose Menjivar. He now faces several charges.
 
Witnesses said Menjivar drove as fast as 100 mph in the 40 mph zone. In addition, police said his blood-alcohol level was more than three times higher than the legal limit.
 
The affidavit showed officers discovered empty beer cans on the front passenger floorboard. Additionally, there was an overwhelming scent of an unknown alcoholic beverage inside the alleged DUI driver’s Toyota Tundra.
 
A local news source found out that Menijvar is a habitual traffic offender. His court records show he previously had a DUI.
