Malyn Pavolka Arrested in Major Fatal Car Accident in Tucson
TUCSON, AZ (November 7, 2024) — 95-year-old Maria Melendez and four other family members died in an accident on Monday, October 21.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety said the accident occurred at about 4:42 p.m. on Camino Verde and Ajo Way.
DPS said a Toyota Corolla traveled west on Ajo Way. Then it failed to stop at a red light at San Joaquin Road.
After that, the vehicle collided into the left side of a Nissan Rogue. The impact pushed the SUV into the median, where it burst into flames.
The five people inside the Nissan died at the scene. Authorities later identified them as 95-year-old Maria Melendez and 73-year-old Antonio Melendez, who was behind the wheel. In the backseats were 65-year-old Susana Mosqueda, 71-year-old Maria Elena Ledesma, and 73-year-old Jose Ferlan Ledesma. Their loved ones made a GoFundMe to help their bereaved families.
Meanwhile, authorities identified the driver of the Corolla as Malyn Pavolka. She told law enforcement she did not remember the collision, nor the moments that lead up to the crash. Paramedics then brought her to the hospital for assessment.
DPS believes impairment is a factor in the collision.
Pavolka currently faces five counts of manslaughter.
Our heartfelt sympathies to the loved ones of Maria Melendez, Antonio Melendez, Susana Mosqueda, Maria Ledesma, and Jose Ledesma.
