Joe Smith Jr. and Teen Boy Die after Head-On Accident in Lufkin
LUFKIN, TX (November 7, 2024) — 53-year-old Joe Smith Jr., of Diboll, and a teen died in a head-on accident on Saturday, October 26.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the crash happened at about 8:00 a.m. on FM 1818, near FM 58.
Texas DPS said Smith Jr. drove eastbound in a 2015 Ford Expedition on FM 1818. Then during a period of heavy fog, he attempted to pass the vehicle in front of him. However, he failed to do so safely and crashed head-on into a westbound 1997 Ford Ranger.
Smith Jr. and a 13-year-old boy, who was a passenger in the Ford Ranger, died at the scene.
Meanwhile, the driver of the Ford Ranger, identified as 45-year-old Bradley Leverett, of Huntington, and a 16-year-old female passenger, sustained injuries. Paramedics transported them to St. Luke’s Health Memorial for treatment.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident.
