Maegan Engh Killed, John Townshend Arrested after Spokane Valley Hit-and-Run

SPOKANE VALLEY, WA (March 1, 2024) — 46-year-old Maegan Engh died after being seriously injured in a hit-and-run on January 24.

According to the Spokane Valley police, the incident happened in the 5200 block of East Broadway Avenue, near the Spokane County Fairgrounds.

Investigators said 64-year-old John Townshend struck Engh with a 2014 Jeep Wrangler on East Broadway Avenue. Then Townshend drove away.

Townshend claimed that after he struck the woman with his vehicle, he tried to find her, but he thought that she had fled. He described the incident as a graze when police questioned him.

Officers then booked Townshend into the Spokane County Jail on January 29. He faces charges on suspicion of felony hit-and-run with injury and an unrelated misdemeanor warrant.

The Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office said Engh died Tuesday, February 13. Investigators then requested that Townshend’s charge be upgraded to hit-and-run causing death.

Townshend is still in the Spokane County Jail Thursday on a $27,750 bond, including $25,000 for the hit-and-run. His trial will be on April 8.
