Luis Zamora, Juan Lopez Die after Pecos Head-On Crash

 
PECOS, TX (April 11, 2024) — Juan Elisandro Lopez and Luis Carlos Zamora died in a head-on accident on Thursday, April 4.
 
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the two-vehicle crash took place on Highway 17, about two miles south of the 20 Freeway at about 8:15 p.m.
 
Investigators said 42-year-old Laura Archuleta drove a Ford F-150 northbound on Highway 17. Then she tried top to pass a semi-truck. However, she failed to pass to the left safely, as oncoming traffic was in the southbound lanes.
 
After that, Archuleta crashed head-on into a southbound GMC Sierra.
 
The driver of the Sierra, 22-year-old Juan Elisandro Lopez and a passenger identified as 40-year-old Luis Carlos Zamora died at the scene. They were both Rio Grande City residents.
 
Troopers said Zamora did not wear a seatbelt at the time of the collision.
 
Meanwhile, paramedics brought Archuleta to a Lubbock hospital for treatment of critical injuries sustained in the accident.
 
Authorities continue to investigate the crash.
