Joseph Thompson and Jessica Thompson Killed in Live Oak County DUI Accident
LIVE OAK COUNTY, TX (November 6, 2024) — A couple, identified as Joseph Thompson and Jessica Thompson, died in a DUI accident on Monday, October 28.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the crash occurred at about 7:28 p.m. on 37 Freeway near mile marker 53.
Texas DPS said 32-year-old Junior Velasquez drove a 2016 Dodge Ram 2500 truck the wrong way in the northbound lanes of 37 Freeway. Then it struck a Volkswagen Atlas on the inside northbound lane.
The impact caused the Atlas to veer off the roadway. Then it came to a stop against the center median cable barrier. After that, the Atlas caught fire and its occupants got trapped inside and died.
Officials later identified the Atlas driver as 55-year-old Joseph Thompson and the passenger as 44-year-old Jessica Thompson. Both were Corpus Christi residents.
DPS troopers determined Velasquez was under the influence. Officers first transported him to Christus Spohn Hospital in Beeville for medical clearance. After that, they brought him to the Live Oak County Jail and charged him with two counts of intoxication manslaughter.
The George West Highway Patrol Office continues to investigate the incident.
Our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Joseph Thompson and Jessica Thompson.
