Jonathan Washington Killed and Edgar Cortez Arrested in Sunnyvale DUI Accident

 
SUNNYVALE, TX (December 11, 2024) — A 34-year-old youth football coach, Jonathan D. Washington, died in an accident on Sunday, December 1.
 
According to the Sunnyvale Police, the crash happened on Highway 80, near Lawson Road at around 2:00 a.m.
 
Sunnyvale Police say 22-year-old Edgar Cortez, of Kaufman County, drove west in the eastbound lanes of Highway 80. Then he crashed into a Dodge Challenger driven by Washington, who was on his way home from a part-time job.
 
Washington sustained fatal injuries in the incident and died. A longtime family friend, Anquan Jackson, said Washington was a youth football coach in Mesquite. He just won the championship this year in the Mesquite football league, Jackson added.
 
Meanwhile, police said Cortez was drunk and drove the wrong way when the incident occurred. They then charged him with intoxication manslaughter and driving while under the influence. He is currently held in the Mesquite city jail on a $252,000 bond.
