Ivory Smith Dead, Christina Quainoo Hospitalized, Joel Chacin Arrested after Houston DUI Accident

 
HOUSTON, TX (December 11, 2024) — A 7-year-old girl identified as Ivory Smith died in a DUI accident on Sunday, December 1.
 
Houston Police said the incident took place on Bammel North Houston Road near Sam Houston Parkway around 2:00 a.m.
 
According to the Houston Police, the accident occurred when 41-year-old Joel Gonzalez Chacin ran a red light on Bammel North Houston Road. Then, his vehicle into another car occupied by a mother and her 7-year-old daughter.
 
The daughter, identified as Ivory Smith, a second-grade student at Klenk Elementary School, died at the scene.
 
Meanwhile, her mother, identified as Christina Quainoo, sustained critical injuries. She faces a long recovery process as she will need to relearn how to walk. Loved ones made a GoFundMe to help her with the funeral and medical expenses.
 
Deputies with the Harris County Constable’s Office said Chacin showed multiple signs of intoxication. He currently faces a charge of intoxication manslaughter. They also set his bond at $150,000.
 
If Chacin posts bond, officers will turn him over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Authorities said he is on an ICE hold because he is not a U.S. citizen.
 
If convicted, Chacin will be imprisoned anywhere from two to 20 years.
