Joel Garza Jr. Dead, Ruben Villegas-Rodriguez Hurt after Wrong-Way Accident in Upton County
UPTON COUNTY, TX (December 5, 2024) — An Edinburg man identified as 28-year-old Joel Garza Jr. died in an accident on Tuesday, November 26.
According to a press release by the Texas Department of Public Safety, the accident occurred at about 1:23 p.m. on Highway 349, near mile marker 376.
The initial information determined that a Nissan Altima driven by Garza Jr. traveled northbound on Highway 349. He drove on the wrong side of the roadway in the outside southbound lane. Then Garza left the outside lane and went into the inside lane while still traveling on the wrong side of the roadway.
After that, Garza Jr. collided with a Western Star semi-truck towing a trailer. He sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene.
Meanwhile, paramedics transported the driver of the semi-truck to Rankin Hospital with minor injuries. They identified him as a 60-year-old Ruben Villegas-Rodriguez of Crane.
Officials said both drivers wore seatbelts during the incident.
The DPS spokesperson, Sergeant Steven Blanco, said the incident remains under investigation.
