Joan Cooper Dies Weeks after Del Valle Car Collision on Highway 71 and Highway 130

DEL VALLE, TX (January 22, 2024) — A woman, 76-year-old Joan M. Cooper, died weeks after a December crash on Highway 71 on Sunday, December 17.

According to the Austin Police Department, the accident took place near the intersection of East Highway 71 and Highway 130 at about 7:45 a.m.

APD said Cooper drove a sedan westbound. Then, for reasons still unknown, she turned left in front of a pickup truck moving in the same direction next to her. That caused the truck to hit her driver’s side door.

Paramedics rushed Cooper to a local hospital, where she died three weeks later on January 7.

The incident is still under investigation. Officers urge anyone with information to call APD’s Vehicular Homicide Unit at 512-974-8111.
