According to the Washington State Patrol, the accident occurred on Highway 506 near 5 Freeway at around 6:25 p.m.
Johnston rode a 2024 Yamaha motorcycle east on Highway 506 approaching the exit to southbound 5 Freeway. At the same time, a westbound 2003 Nissan Pathfinder driven by 36-year-old Beatriz Martinez Aviles, of Woodland, tried to turn left from Highway 506 to get on the southbound 5 Freeway. That is when the Pathfinder struck the motorcycle.
The impact of the collision caused Johnston’s motorcycle to rest over an embankment.
Johnston suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.
Martinez Aviles was not hurt in the incident. Her passengers identified as 49-year-old Francisca Aviles Reyes and 57-year-old Paulina Avilez Reyes, both of Woodland, did not sustain injuries.
WSP listed inattention as the cause of the accident. In addition, they also noted that impairment was not a factor.
Official reports said Johnston wore a helmet. The driver and passengers of the Pathfinder also wore seat belts.
Our deepest sympathies to the loved ones of Jennie Johnston.
