Craig Cooper Killed and Andrew Perez Arrested after DUI Accident in Phoenix
PHOENIX, AZ (October 1, 2024) — 42-year-old Craig Cooper died in a DUI accident on Sunday, September 22.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the accident happened on the 10 Freeway near the 39th Avenue overpass at about 1:30 a.m.
Troopers reportedly noticed a vehicle traveling at around 140 miles per hour on the 10 Freeway. Then it struck a motorcycle driven by Cooper.
Emergency responders arrived and transported Cooper to the hospital where medical officers pronounced him dead.
After striking the motorcycle, the vehicle involved traveled another mile. Then it came to rest and caught fire.
Authorities arrested the driver of the car identified as Andrew Ramirez Perez for suspected impairment. DPS says the suspect had a BAC of 0.145 following the accident. Troopers also said they smelled alcohol on Perez’s breath. In addition, they also noticed his bloodshot, watery eyes.
Court documents said authorities booked Perez into the Maricopa County jail on one count of second-degree murder. He also has a pending DUI charge.
Officers closed the eastbound 10 Freeway for several hours as they investigated the crash. The freeway has since reopened.
Cooper’s family organized a GoFundMe to help cover the funeral expenses.
