Howard Petrea Dead, Three Injured in Smith County Car Crash

 
SMITH COUNTY, TX (January 31, 2023) – 89-year-old Howard Wayne Petrea of Mineola died while two others sustained injuries after a car crash on US Highway 80 and FM 1253 on Friday morning, January 20.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the fatal crash took place around 10:50 a.m.

Petrea was stopped at a stop sign at the intersection with two passengers. At the same time, 23-year-old Terrance Boyd was traveling eastbound on US 80 in a 2016 Ford Mustang, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Petrea – driving a 2018 Chevrolet Impala – failed to yield right-of-way, causing the Mustang to collide with the driver’s side.

Petrea died at the scene, police said.

Two passengers in the Impala, 70-year-old Stanley Phillips and 65-year-old Carol Phillips, both of Fort Worth, suffered injuries and were taken to the UT Health main campus in Tyler. They are Petrea’s daughter and son-in-law.

Boyd received non-incapacitating injuries and was taken to Christus Mother Frances hospital in Tyler.
