79-year-old Gunji Toriyama Dead after Tucson Pedestrian Accident

 
TUCSON, AZ (January 17, 2024) — A 79-year-old man identified as Gunji Toriyama died in a pedestrian accident on Wednesday, January 10.
 
According to a Tucson Police Department release, the crash took place on East Pima Street near North Wilmot Road shortly before 6:00 p.m.
 
Investigators determined that Toriyama tried to cross Pima Street from south to north in a marked crosswalk. Then an eastbound Ram pickup truck struck him.
 
After receiving reports of the scene, officers promptly responded to the area. They pronounced Toriyama dead at the scene.
 
The driver of the pickup, only described as a 33-year-old male, immediately stopped after the crash. He remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. Officials said he was not impaired.
 
Officers later determined that failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk was the major contributing factor in the incident. In addition, detectives issued a criminal citation to the driver for Causing Death by an Applicable Title 28 Moving Violation.
