PHOENIX, AZ (March 18, 2024) — A woman identified as 38-year-old Debbie Alvarez died in a DUI crash on Wednesday, March 6.

According to the Phoenix police, officers responded to a two-car crash at around 9:45 p.m. on a 10 Freeway overpass near 51st Avenue.

Authorities said during an initial investigation, detectives determined that 22-year-old Dre Lewis drove a vehicle northbound on 51st Avenue. Then he failed to yield for a red light. After that, he collided with the other vehicle.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found four people with injuries.

Paramedics rushed the driver of the second vehicle, identified as a man, and his two passengers, Alvarez and a 3-year-old boy, to a hospital.

Court paperwork said that the impact ejected the boy from the vehicle. He sustained serious injuries.

Alvarez later died in the hospital.

Paramedics transported Lewis to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Court paperwork said his mother contacted the authorities saying he had been drinking before he took her car without her permission.
