Deputy Charles Rivette Dies after Centerville Five-Vehicle Accident on 45 Freeway
CENTERVILLE, TX (February 28, 2024) — A Montgomery County sheriff’s deputy identified as 38-year-old Charles Rivette died in a crash on Wednesday, February 21.
The crash took place on the 45 Freeway a few minutes before 10:30 p.m. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, an MCSO patrol vehicle conducted an inmate transport moving southbound on the 45 Freeway.
Then it struck an 18-wheeler moving southbound. Officials believe the patrol car probably sideswiped the 18-wheeler.
The impact of the collision ejected Deputy Rivette from the front seat passenger of the patrol vehicle. Then he landed in the northbound lanes. After that, a pickup truck in the northbound lanes struck him. At the same, two other 18-wheelers struck the patrol vehicle.
Both the driver of the patrol vehicle, identified as 37-year-old Deputy James Francis, and the inmate who was in the back seat, sustained serious injuries. Paramedics airlifted them to area hospitals.
EMS responders pronounced Deputy Rivette dead at the scene.
One of the 18-wheeler drivers who struck the patrol vehicle also suffered minor injuries. Paramedics rushed them to the hospital. DPS said the other drivers involved were not hurt.
The Texas Highway Patrol handles the ongoing investigation of the crash.
