Casey Frankoski, John Grassia, and Chris Luna Killed in National Guard Helicopter Crash

 
RIO GRANDE CITY, TX (March 19, 2024) — Two National Guardsmen, Casey Frankoski and John Grassia, died in a helicopter crash on Friday, March 8.
 
Border Patrol Agent 49-year-old Chris Luna also died in the incident.
 
The Department of Defense’s Joint Task Force North said the helicopter assigned to the federal Southwest border support mission crashed at about 2:50 p.m. It happened while they conducted aviation operations near Rio Grande City, Texas.
 
Two New York National Guard members identified as 28-year-old Chief Warrant Officer 2 Frankoski, and 30-year-old Chief Warrant Officer 2 Grassia died in the crash.
 
Officials said one New York National Guard soldier also sustained injuries. The soldier, whose identity was not yet available, was the aircraft crew chief. The soldier is still hospitalized as of Sunday.
 
According to a defense official, the helicopter was a National Guard Lakota UH-72
 
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
 
The Texas Department of Public Safety also assisted during the investigation.
