LAKEWOOD, CO (March 19, 2024) — An 83-year-old man identified as Richard Waugh died after a hit-and-run on Saturday, March 2.
 
According to the Lakewood Police Department, the accident took place on West Jewell Avenue and South Harlan Street at night.
 
Lakewood police said 29-year-old Juan Terriquez Rendon allegedly crashed into another car near the intersection.
 
Waugh, the driver of the other vehicle died after the crash.
 
Following the incident, Rendon tried to flee. However, witnesses caught him.
 
Body-worn camera footage displays an officer moving towards a man flanked by two other people. Then one of them tells the officer that the man was the driver of the truck. Then they tackled him because he tried to run twice.
 
In a statement posted on X, Lakewood police said, “While we do not recommend this type of justice, we do appreciate the citizens who were there to help us.”
 
Authorities arrested Rendon on suspicion of vehicular homicide while driving under the influence.
