MESA, AZ (February 25, 2025) — Aymee Ruiz and four others sustained injuries in a fiery cement truck accident on Tuesday, February 18.
 
The Arizona Department of Public Safety said the multi-vehicle crash happened on Highway 60 near Val Vista Drive at around 7:00 a.m.
 
DPS said Ruiz was stopped in traffic when a cement mixer truck rear-ended her pickup. The impact caused the pickup to flip onto its side and catch fire.
 
Witnesses attempted to break the windows. Then Chandler Police Officer Brian Larison, who was nearby, used a baton to shatter the glass. Before Ruiz could escape, the truck flipped back upright. It momentarily trapped her inside as the flames grew closer.
 
Peoria Firefighter Asa Paguia, who was also passing by, helped pull Ruiz out through the broken window. She suffered minor burns and bruises but survived.
 
Four others sustained injuries in the incident.
 
Ruiz later reunited with Larison and Paguia on February 20, calling them heroes. She also expressed gratitude for their quick actions.
 
The Arizona Department of Public Safety cited the cement truck driver for failing to control his vehicle. They only identified him as a 42-year-old man from Arizona City.
