Ashley Vailes Dead in Traffic Accident on 35th Avenue and Thunderbird Road

 
PHOENIX, AZ (December 29, 2023) — A woman identified as 19-year-old Ashley Vailes died in a traffic crash on Thursday, December 21.
 
According to Phoenix police, the accident took place near 35th Avenue and Thunderbird Road shortly before 9 a.m.
 
Police said a Phoenix police officer transporting a prisoner drove westbound on Thunderbird Road. Then he tried to turn south onto 35th Avenue. After that, they crashed into a second vehicle driven by Vailes, which moved eastbound on Thunderbird Road.
 
The second vehicle involved then continued and collided into a light pole. Then it hit a power box and caught fire.
 
Firefighters responded to the scene and put out the fire. However, Vailes did not survive.
 
Police said Vailes entered the intersection on a red light shortly before the incident occurred.
 
First responders rushed the officer and the prisoner in the vehicle to a hospital for precautionary measures. They are expected to be okay.
 
Phoenix police said it is protocol to have an internal investigation after any accident involving police.
