Larry Wilkerson Fatally Injured in Two-Vehicle Accident on Highway 77
SAN PATRICIO COUNTY, TX (December 10, 2024) — 80-year-old Larry Wilkerson, of Odem, died in a car accident on Highway 77 on November 27.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the incident occurred at around 2:22 p.m.
Texas DPS said Wilkerson drove a 1989 Toyota Tacoma south on Highway 77, about 2 miles north of Odem. Then he failed to control his speed and struck the back of a 1998 Chevrolet C35 moving in front of him.
After the collision, the Tacoma went onto the inside shoulder of the 75 mph roadway. Meanwhile, the C35 came to rest on the outside shoulder.
Wilkerson sustained fatal injuries in the incident. Judge Danny Garza pronounced him dead at the scene.
Authorities later identified the man behind the Chevrolet as 27-year-old Alex Gonzalez, of Corpus Christi. He did not sustain any injuries.
Sgt. Harold Mallory of the Texas Highway Patrol Corpus Christi District said the accident was likely caused by the driver not paying attention to the road ahead. He reminded motorists to remain alert and focus on the road.
The Sinton Highway Patrol office state troopers handle the investigation of the incident.
