Wrong-Way Driver Killed in Watkins Crash on 70 Freeway

 
WATKINS, CO (December 4, 2024) – Authorities confirmed an 18-year-old man from Aurora died in a wrong-way crash on 70 Freeway on November 24.
 
According to the Colorado State Patrol, the accident happened around 12:15 AM. Based on a report, the man was driving a Subaru Impreza west in the eastbound lanes of the freeway before the crash.
 
According to CSP, the trooper was traveling west and tried to get the victim’s attention with a spotlight. However, the man drove away proceeding west in the eastbound lanes. The trooper turned his emergency lights on and followed the wrong-way driver from the right side of the road.
 
After several minutes of this, the driver crashed head-on with a semi-truck.
 
As a result, the victim suffered grave injuries and died in the incident. The Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office did not release the victim’s name, pending kin notification.
 
The truck driver was not hurt in the incident.
 
The Westminster Police Department is leading the investigation with the 17th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team.
