Fatal Seattle Accident on Airport Way South near South Hardy Street
SEATTLE, WA (August 22, 2024) — A woman died following a speeding accident on Airport Way South on Thursday, August 8.
According to the Washington State Patrol, the accident happened at about 7:30 a.m. on Airport Way South near South Hardy Street.
WSP troopers initially attempted to stop the driver of a Jeep Cherokee for expired registration tags. However, the driver allegedly declined to stop.
Investigators said the driver fled at a high speed and then troopers lost sight of the vehicle.
Then witnesses saw the vehicle travel at speeds over 100 mph. That is when it struck a light pole and overturned. Troopers were not actively pursuing the Jeep when the crash occurred, WSP said.
According to WSP, responding officers pronounced the passenger dead at the scene. Her name is not immediately available, but reports describe her as a woman in her 50s.
Meanwhile, paramedics brought the driver to Harborview Medical Center. Authorities said after her release from the hospital, they will book the driver, who is in her 30s, into the King County Jail. She will face a charge of second-degree murder.
SPD’s Traffic Collision Investigation Squad handles the ongoing investigation.
