Two Dead in Plane Crash at Marana Regional Airport

 
MARANA, AZ (February 21, 2025) — Two people died after a midair plane crash at Marana Regional Airport on Wednesday, February 19.
 
The crash occurred around 8:30 a.m. at Marana Regional Airport near Avra Valley Road and Sandario Road, just west of 10 Freeway.
 
According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), a Cessna 172S and a Lancair 360 MK II collided midair. Both aircraft had two people aboard.
 
Officials reported that the Lancair crashed near a runway and caught fire, killing both occupants. The two individuals in the Cessna survived without serious injuries. Authorities have not yet released the names of the victims.
 
The Marana Police Department is gathering witness statements and reviewing any available footage. Additionally, investigators are also examining whether both pilots were communicating properly before the collision.
 
Marana Regional Airport operates as an uncontrolled field without an air traffic control tower. Pilots use a common frequency to coordinate landings and departures.
 
The Federal Aviation Administration and NTSB lead the investigation. A preliminary report is expected within 30 days. However, the final report detailing the cause may take up to two years.
