Fatal School Bus Accident on Highway 21 in Bastrop County

 
BASTROP COUNTY, TX (March 29, 2024) – Police confirmed that two people – including a child – died in a school bus accident on Highway 21 on March 22.
 
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the crash happened about 50 miles east of Austin. Based on a report, the bus carried Tom Green Elementary pre-K students returning from a field trip to the Capital of Texas Zoo in Cedar Creek. The Hays Consolidated Independent School District said it had 44 students and 11 adults on board.
 
Due to unknown reasons, a cement truck veered into a school bus on the highway. A third vehicle, a Dodge Charger following the bus, was also involved.
 
Police could not confirm if the concrete truck driver, later identified as Jerry Hernandez, would face charges.
 
As a result, a boy on the bus and an adult occupant of the Dodge suffered grave injuries and died in the incident. However, officials did not release their names, pending next of kin notification.
 
Four others were taken to hospitals by helicopter in critical condition. Crews rushed six others to hospitals by ground ambulance with serious injuries. In addition, officials said there were additional patients with minor injuries.
 
Police said the bus had no seat belts.
 
As of now, the officers are investigating the crash.
