TUKWILA, WA (December 26, 2024) — Two people sustained injuries in a DUI accident on 5 Freeway on Saturday, December 7.
 
According to the Washington State Patrol, the incident occurred at around 12:24 a.m. on the 5 Freeway near Southcenter Boulevard.
 
WSP said a 2019 Kia Optima hit a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado in the first lane of the freeway. The impact caused the Silverado to strike the right shoulder barrier. After that, it came to a stop on its side against a guardrail.
 
Meanwhile, the Kia stopped partially in the first lane and on the shoulder.
 
Both drivers sustained injuries and paramedics transported them to Valley Medical Center.
 
The Kia driver faces charges of driving under the influence and vehicular assault.
 
Investigators have not yet determined the cause of the collision. However, WSP confirmed that impairment was a factor in the crash.
 
The accident blocked all lanes of the freeway. Officials reopened all closed lanes after six hours and one minute.
 
Authorities continue to investigate the crash.
