Tina Abbay and Teen Die after Plains Car Accident on Highway 82

 
PLAINS, TX (September 26, 2024) — 35-year-old Tina Ann Abbay, of Las Cruces, New Mexico died in an accident on Friday, September 20.
 
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the crash occurred on FM 769 near Highway 82 at about 11:30 a.m.
 
DPS said Abbay drove a 2018 Chevy Malibu south on FM 769, approaching the intersection with Highway 82. Then, she failed to stop at the intersection and crashed into a 2022 Ford F-350 towing a farm trailer moving east on Highway 82.
 
Abbay and a 15-year-old boy from Las Cruces, who was a passenger in the Malibu, died at the scene.
 
Four others sustained injuries in the incident. Three of them were also passengers in the Malibu: a 17-year-old girl, a 9-year-old boy, and a 1-year-old girl.
 
Paramedics brought all three children to the University Medical Center in Lubbock. The 1-year-old girl received treatment for serious injuries. Meanwhile, the elder two children sustained moderate injuries.
 
The driver of the truck sustained minor injuries and received treatment on the scene. Authorities identified him as 53-year-old Alvie Matthew Smith, of Artesia, New Mexico.
 
DPS said everyone involved wore a seatbelt or was secured in a car seat.
