DUI Driver Causes Car Crash on Lawrence Lake Road in Yelm, Sheriff Derek Sanders Injured
YELM, WA (April 6, 2023) – Officers confirmed that Thurston County Sheriff Derek Sanders suffered injuries in a DUI crash on Lawrence Lake Road Southeast on April 2.
According to the Washington State Patrol, the collision happened at 153rd Avenue Southeast around 3:30 PM. Based on a report, Sanders was driving his department vehicle south on Lawrence Lake Road at the time of the crash.
Due to unknown reasons, a pickup truck traveling east on 153rd Avenue pulled in front of him and caused a crash.
As a result, Sanders was hurt in the incident. Emergency crews airlifted him to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for treatment.
Officers arrested the other driver, a 29-year-old Yelm man, on suspicion of driving under the influence while the incident is being investigated.
At this point, an investigation into the accident is ongoing.
