According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, a gray Mazda car with a fake license plate sped northbound on Sunland Park Drive. At around 1:00 a.m., a state trooper tried to pull over the vehicle.

However, the driver refused to stop and the pursuit began. They continued eastbound until the vehicle crashed into a concrete barrier at Chelsea Street next to the 10 Freeway.
