Teen Evading Arrest Dies in Crash on Highway 84 near Southland in Slaton

 
SLATON, TX (September 16, 2024) – Authorities confirmed that a 16-year-old from Joshua died in a stolen car crash on Highway 84 on September 8.
 
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the collision happened near Southland around 7:00 AM. Based on a report, the victim was driving a 2018 Hyundai passenger that DPS reported stolen from Burleson.
 
During a traffic stop, the driver tried to evade arrest by a Garza County Sheriff’s Office deputy conducting a routine traffic stop. The victim sped up while exiting the highway. Due to unknown reasons, he did not navigate a turnaround underneath an overpass which caused the vehicle to lose control. The car then traveled off the road, struck a flatbed train car, and caught fire.
 
As a result, the victim sustained grave injuries and died in the incident. Officials did not release the victim’s name, pending kin notification.
 
As of now, an investigation into the case is ongoing. In addition, no other details are available.
