PUTNAM, TX (September 4, 2024) — 66-year-old Tammy Sue Burks from Grand Rapids, Michigan, died in a car accident on Monday, September 2.
 
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the crash happened shortly before 3:00 a.m. on 20 Freeway, about three miles east of Putnam.
 
The initial investigation said 24-year-old Mark Anthony Smith Jr. of Rotan, Texas, drove a 1999 Ford F-150 pickup truck on 20 Freeway. Then he lost control due to wet road conditions. It resulted in the truck leaving the roadway and then it overturned into a barrow ditch.
 
Burks, who was a passenger in the pickup truck, suffered fatal injuries. Emergency responders brought her to Hendrick Medical Center where a medical personnel pronounced her dead.
 
Smith and another passenger, 21-year-old Makayla Nicole Line, also from Rotan, suffered injuries in the incident. Paramedics also transported them to Hendrick Medical Center with minor injuries. Reports later said they are in stable condition.
 
The crash happened during rainy conditions. The posted speed limit in the area is 75 mph.
