Sean Smet Killed in Bellingham Pedestrian Accident on 5 Freeway

 
BELLINGHAM, WA (January 14, 2025) — 24-year-old Sean M. Smet, of Bellingham, died in a pedestrian accident on Tuesday, January 7.
 
According to the Washington State Patrol, the incident happened at around 6:47 p.m. at 5 Freeway and Meridian Street.
 
WSP said a 36-year-old Mount Vernon woman drove a 2019 Subaru south on 5 Freeway. Then she struck a pedestrian later identified as Smet.
 
Paramedics arrived and then pronounced Smet dead at the scene.
 
Officers closed the freeway in both directions between Meridian Street and Northwest Avenue.
 
WSP, the Washington State Department of Transportation, and the Whatcom County 911 dispatch center notified motorists of the freeway closure late Tuesday on social media.
 
Officers reopened one lane of traffic opened in each direction of the freeway at about 9:15 p.m., said WSP. All lanes reopened a little after midnight.
