Robert Hurd Killed in Wolfforth Bicycle Crash on Highway 62

WOLFFORTH, TX (September 26, 2023) — Cyclist 62-year-old Robert Hurd of Middletown, Connecticut died in a car accident on Thursday, September 21.

Hurd rode his bicycle along the shoulder on Highway 62 near County Road 1300 in Crosby County to raise money for other cyclists. After that, the pickup truck struck him just after 9:00 a.m.

Authorities said the truck traveled in the outside lane. Then Hurd veered into its travel lane before the truck fatally hit him.

Paramedics transported the driver of the truck to University Medical Center with serious injuries.

According to a GoFundMe, Hurd travels across the county raising for a nonprofit organization called Please Be Kind to Cyclists.

“I will be riding my bike across the country starting in San Francisco back home to Connecticut,” Hurd said on the fundraiser. “I would love to raise money for athletes who have been injured in car crashes. My goal is to raise $10,000 to donate to Please Be Kind to Cyclists.”

Hurd shared that a car struck him in 2015 while cycling. Then he spent two weeks in the ICU to recover from the injuries sustained in the crash.

“I now have the privilege to share my story and eight years later I want to give back,” Hurd stated.

Authorities continue to investigate the crash.
