GUN BARREL CITY, TX (September 2, 2024) — A 30-year-old German tourist identified as Rick Mueller died in a hit-and-run on Monday, August 19.
 
According to the Gun Barrel City Police Department, the incident occurred at about 4:09 p.m. on Highway 175 at the Highway 334 overpass.
 
The caller said that a medium-sized semi-truck hit a bicyclist. Then the semi failed to stop and continued east towards Eustace.
 
Authorities identified the bicyclist as Mueller. He was a German citizen on a tour to visit the country’s historical sites. The release said Mueller succumbed to his injuries and died. He had a journal with him that had several entries about his travels in the States.
 
According to the GCPD release, the truck transferred red paint onto Mueller’s bicycle. However, callers said it is brown in color. This led officers to believe it was very dirty. Witnesses last saw it hauling two shipping containers.
 
The release noted that it is possible the semi driver is not aware they struck the bicycle.
