Patricia Ritter Dies after Sabine County Multi-Vehicle Crash on Highway 96

SABINE COUNTY, TX (February 26, 2024) — A Hemphill nursing home resident, 80-year-old Patricia Ritter of Pineland, died in a multi-vehicle crash on Monday, February 19.

According to a Texas Department of Public Safety report, the incident happened on U.S. Highway 96 at about 8:00 a.m.

Texas DPS said a Dodge Caravan moved south on Highway 96 behind a Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Equinox. The report said due to the heavy smoke in the area, the driver of the Dodge misjudged their speed. It resulted in their vehicle crashing with the other two vehicles.

After the initial accident, a truck tractor moving north hit the Ford. The impact pushed it back into the Dodge. As a result, the van collided with a Ford F-250 traveling south.

Paramedics rushed the driver of the Dodge, 64-year-old Karen Underwood, of Bronson, and one passenger to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

They also transported Ritter, who is also another passenger of the Dodge. However, she died of sustained injuries.

According to Tiffani Bradberry, administrator of Legacies Nursing and Rehabilitation, Underwood and the other injured passenger were staff members of Hemphill nursing home. She added that Ritter was a resident. The trio were on the way to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston when the crash happened, Bradberry said.
