Fatal Wrong-Way Car Crash on Highway 4, One Arrested

PITTSBURG, CA (December 21, 2022) — A person died while three other people sustained injuries following a wrong-way car crash on Highway 4 on Tuesday morning, December 13.

The fatal collision occurred at around 11:05 a.m. near Railroad Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol. It involved a Dodge Durango, a Honda Accord, a Toyota and a tanker truck.

Authorities said the Durango traveled against oncoming traffic before crashing head-on into the Accord. The Toyota and tanker truck then ended up colliding with the Accord.

The force of impact inflicted fatal injuries to the unidentified driver of the Accord, who died at the scene.

Respondents then transported a passenger in the Accord to a hospital for treatment of major injuries.

Officials also brought the driver of the Toyota and an infant passenger to the hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, the driver of the Durango fled the scene before Pittsburg police placed him under arrest.

Officials are still looking into the factors surrounding the crash but believe that impairment may have been an influence in the incident.

With investigation still ongoing, the CHP’s Contra Costa-area office is encouraging anyone with information to contact them at (925) 646-4980.
