Nicholas Bechthold Killed after Wrong-Way Amarillo Crash on 40 Freeway

 
AMARILLO, TX (July 30, 2024) — One person identified as 34-year-old Nicholas Bechthold died in a wrong-way accident on Wednesday, July 17.
 
According to Amarillo police, the incident took place on 40 Freeway near Grand Street at around 4:00 a.m.
 
Amarillo police said Bechthold drove westbound in the eastbound lanes of the 40 Freeway. Then his 2018 Chevy Silverado struck a semi head-on between Grand Street and Eastern Street.
 
Responding officers arrived at the area and then pronounced Bechthold dead at the scene. Officials later ordered an autopsy.
 
The Traffic Investigation Unit handles the ongoing investigation of the incident.
