Nathan Sanchez Dead, Oscar Padilla Jr. Arrested in Yakima DUI Car Accident

YAKIMA, WA (November 13, 2024) — 18-year-old Nathan A. Sanchez, of Yakima, died in DUI accident on Thursday, October 31.

According to the Yakima Sheriff’s deputies, the accident occurred on the 9000 block of Roza Hill Drive, east of the Terrace Heights Landfill at about 7:25 p.m.

Sheriff’s deputies and paramedics responded to the scene. Then they determined that a 1988 GMC pickup truck driven by 18-year-old Oscar Padilla Jr., of Yakima, failed to make a turn in the road. After that, the vehicle rolled over 40 feet down an embankment.

The impact ejected two of the passengers from the truck. Paramedics transported them both to MultiCare Yakima Memorial Hospital. One of them was Sanchez, who died from sustained injuries. Loved ones made a GoFundMe page to help his family with the funeral costs.

Meanwhile, the other passenger received treatment for injuries, including a broken leg. Authorities identified him as 19-year-old Carlos A. Hernandez-Pena, also of Yakima.

Deputies said Padilla had a strong smell of intoxicants and also failed a field sobriety test. They then arrested him on suspicion of vehicular homicide and held him in the Yakima County jail.

Yakima County Superior Court Judge Kevin Naught set his bail at $20,000.
