THORNTON, CO (August 12, 2024) — Officers arrested 34-year-old Matthew Lopez, of Adams County, after a fatal hit-and-run on Tuesday, 23.
 
According to the Thornton Police Department, the crash happened on the 84th Avenue bridge over 25 Freeway on Tuesday morning.
 
Thornton Police said an unidentified man died after a driver of an SUV struck him. Then the vehicle fled the scene.
 
The Adams County Coroner’s Office has not yet released the identity of the victim, pending family notification.
 
Officials later described the suspect vehicle as a red and tan Ford Explorer with Colorado license plate CQJ-N56. In addition, they said the crash appeared intentional. They were able to track down the SUV on Tuesday, which led them to Lopez.
 
According to jail records, officers arrested Lopez for investigation of homicide. Then they booked him into the Adams County Detention Facility at around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.
 
A Thornton Police Department spokesperson said the department plans to recommend first-degree murder charges to the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
