According to the Corpus Christi Police Department, the crash took place in the 2900 block of Highway 358 near Kostoryz Road at around 1:30 a.m.

Corpus Christi Police said 31-year-old Garner Burford told them he was not paying attention and was looking at his phone. Then he rear-ended another vehicle driven by Mendoza.

Corpus Christi Police Department officers said that Burford claimed he did not see the Mendoza’s car after the crash. Then he assumed it continued driving, so he left the scene.

Once in police custody, officers brought Burford to Christus Spohn Shoreline Hospital, where he was medically cleared. After that, they took him to the City Detention Center for booking.

Investigators acquired a warrant for Burford for an accident involving injury or death on a bond of $75,000.
