PHOENIX, AZ (November 20, 2024) — Maria Vazquez and Dayana Aguilar died in a wrong-way accident on Thursday, November 7.
 
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the crash occurred at about 2:00 a.m. on the 17 Freeway near Indian School Road.
 
Traffic cameras captured a wrong-way Prius driver traveling south in the northbound lanes of the 17 Freeway. Then wrong-way driver continued until Grant Street, where she crashed head-on into a black Camry.
 
The wrong-way driver identified Friday as 23-year-old Maria Delrefugio Vazquez, of Glendale, died. Meanwhile, paramedics transported a man and woman inside the Camry to the hospital with serious injuries.
 
Authorities later reported the passenger inside the right-of-way vehicle died. They identified her as 29-year-old Dayana Viola Aguilar.
 
Officers closed the northbound lanes of the freeway and reopened them at around 5:00 a.m.
 
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
